Cost & Convenience
How much does it cost?
The Starter Kit is $148 and includes everything to get going. Expansion Kits are $113 each. Shipping is a flat $19.99 on all orders, regardless of quantity.
Is it beginner friendly?
Yes — it’s very easy to set up and use. If you can fill a reservoir and plug in a pump, you can grow like a pro. No timers or electronics to program.
Can I leave town with this system running?
Definitely! That’s one of the biggest perks. Just make sure your reservoir is full before you go. No more coming home to dead seedlings or trying to train someone to water properly.
Setup & Expansion
How does the system work?
Water is pumped from a reservoir into a water channel below a large flat area holding a capillary mat. One end of the mat sits in the water channel, wicking water evenly across the mat. Plants sit on top, and their soil draws water up through drainage holes to keep them hydrated automatically.
How many trays can be linked together?
We currently have 20 trays linked successfully and have not reached a limit yet. The system supports vertical or horizontal expansion as big or small as you need.
Can it fit on multi-tier shelves?
Yes! The Seedwell Tray system fits well on 3-6 tier shelves. Shelf depth recommended is 20"–24", with a minimum of 18" footprint.
Plant Types & Growing
Does it work with soil blocks or mesh trays?
Yes! Soil blocks work well directly on the capillary mat, and tests with mesh-bottom propagation trays show soil blocks stay 100% hydrated.
Can heat mats be used with the system?
Yes, heat mats work underneath the capillary mat and transfer heat effectively. Tests showed a 12°F increase at the top of cells and 21°F at the bottom.
How often should the pump run?
The pump can run 24/7 to keep water fresh, costing around $4.90 per month on average electricity. Alternatively, it can run intermittently, but never let the mat dry out.
Fertilizing
Can I use fertilizer in the system?
You can use diluted water-soluble fertilizers without clogging. Avoid fish emulsion directly in the water to prevent odors, but foliar spraying is fine.
Maintenance & Cleaning
How often should I clean or replace the capillary mat?
Mats typically last multiple seasons. Clean them at the end of each season by rinsing, soaking in a bleach solution, sun-drying with roots side up, then brushing off roots before storage.
Is the system easy to disassemble and clean?
Yes. The system breaks down easily by loosening two hand-tightened nuts per tray and sliding out the piping. Clean tubing and trays with sanitizing solution before storing.
Watering & Growth Benefits
Does it prevent overwatering or underwatering?
Yes! The system maintains consistent moisture, eliminating guesswork and significantly reducing root rot and soil erosion. Plants grow faster with reliable hydration.
Do seeds germinate faster?
In personal tests, seeds on the Seedwell Tray germinated faster and more consistently compared to outdoor germination.
